This is a "Nishiki-e", or multi-colored woodblock print, entitled "Gekka Sekikou Saito Toshimitsu" by the artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. It is one of the artworks from the print series "Tsuki Hyaku Shi" ("One Hundred Aspects of the Moon", from
the National Diet Library archives).
Saito Toshimitsu (1534-1582) was a warlord who served as the "Hitto Garo" (high ranking samurai) under Akechi Mitsuhide. This print shows the scene of Yoshimitsu scouting his attack route in preparation for what would later be known as the Incident at Honno-ji where Akechi Mitsuhide assassinated Oda Nobunaga.
